Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender on the globe by many of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn everything he possibly could about poker. He would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the detrimental feedback from other people kill his ambition of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil started competing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated many of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and a continuing passion for poker. He says that he is learning every day and is very humble about his success. He admits to making blunders in each game of poker and always aspires to get better.
Although Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a normal basis.
