Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup everything he possibly could about poker. He routinely would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the adverse comments from others annihilate his ambition of becoming one of the best poker players in the world.

He started playing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an undying love for poker. He says that he’s learning every day and is incredibly humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors every single game of poker and always strives to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
