Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker competitor on the planet by most of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn every little thing he could about poker. Phil would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the adverse comments from others annihilate his dream of being one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil started competing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing passion for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every single day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making blunders every single session of poker and always strives to get better.
Even though Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
